The Ultimate Collection

Roy Orbison

2017 - Sony Music Entertainment.  If you take a look at the list of great Rockabilly artists you will certainly find Roy Orbison.  Roy’s career started as a teen when he helped create a band called The Teen Kings.  While at college, Roy was persuaded to listen to a song called “Ooby Dooby,” written by Dick Penner and Wade Moore.  The Teen Kings recorded the song and sent it to Sam Phillips of the infamous Sun Studio in Memphis.  Sam was so impressed that he welcomed the Teen Kings and re-recorded the song.  This song became Roy Orbison’s first song to ever break into the Billboard Hot 100.  Legacy Recordings revisits Mr. Orbison’s records and brings us a great collection of 26 of his well known career songs including “Ooby Dooby.”  Also included amongst this list is “Claudette (Black & Blue Night),” a song that Roy wrote about his then girlfriend Claudette Frady.  He then sold this song to the Everly Brothers which was the B-side of their smash hit “All I Have To Do Is Dream.”  It wasn’t until 1960, that Roy Orbison’s career really took off when he released “Only The Lonely.”  The song transformed Roy into an overnight sensation.  He went on to record other great songs that are also included in this project with “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “You Got It,” “Blue Bayou,” “Love Hurts,” and “Running Scared.”  Other songs include “Blue Angel,” “Dream Baby,” “In Dreams,” “I Drove All Night,” “Walk On,” “Crying,” “Falling,” “California Blue” and “Leah” to name a few.  Towards the end of Orbison’s career he teamed up with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Tom Petty to create the Traveling Wilburys.  This album includes two of the songs that Orbison sang with The Wilburys with “Not Alone Any More” and “Handle With Care.”  Although there was a box set that released majority of Roy Orbison’s songs, this album gives the average fan the opportunity to own some of Roy’s more notable hits.  Subsequently, this is a great collection for an affordable price.  More so, it reminds us of the music that one of the greatest Rockabilly artists had entertained us with.  It is this reviewer’s belief that Legacy Recordings is doing its best to bring back some of the great artists whom ever graced the vast stages and rode the air waves in American music.  This album would be the perfect album to introduce to young listeners to what REAL music is all about! $$$$+
